Book of Leviticus

The Book of Leviticus is the third book of the Pentateuch and contains detailed instructions concerning the laws, worship, sacrifices, priesthood, and ritual life of ancient Israel. Much of the book focuses on how the Israelites were to live as a people set apart for God.

The first sixteen chapters, together with the final chapter, are traditionally associated with the Priestly Code. These chapters include regulations concerning ritual purity and cleanliness, various offerings and sacrifices, the duties of the priests, and the Day of Atonement. Chapter 12 also contains instructions concerning the purification of a woman after childbirth and the covenantal practice of male circumcision.

Chapters 17–26 are commonly known as the Holiness Code. These chapters emphasize Israel’s calling to holiness and contain laws governing worship, moral conduct, relationships, and community life. One of its best-known commandments appears in Leviticus 19:18: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This commandment is later affirmed and emphasized by Jesus in the Gospels as one of the great commandments of God.

Much of Leviticus is concerned with distinguishing what is holy and clean from what is unclean or forbidden. The book contains numerous regulations concerning dietary practices, sexual morality, sacrifices, ritual purity, and other practices considered unacceptable within the covenant community.

Most of these laws are addressed specifically to the people of Israel. However, certain commands also apply to foreigners living among them. For example, the prohibition against sacrificing children to Molech in Chapter 20 explicitly applies both to Israelites and to “the strangers that sojourn in Israel.”

Overall, Leviticus emphasizes the holiness of God and the calling of His people to live in holiness, purity, worship, and obedience in response to their covenant with Him.
