II Peter

The Second Epistle of Peter is a brief letter written as a reminder of the truth of the Christian faith and a warning against the teachings of false teachers and heretics (1:12; 3:1). The letter calls Christians to remain faithful to the apostolic teaching and to hold firmly to the truth they have received.

St. Peter points to the apostolic witness as the foundation of the Church’s proclamation of the Gospel (1:16). He also refers to the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament, explaining that these prophecies have been confirmed through the coming and revelation of Jesus Christ (1:19–21).

The letter also addresses an important question concerning the apparent delay of Christ’s Second Coming. St. Peter explains that the delay is not a sign that God has forgotten His promise. Rather, it demonstrates God’s patience and mercy, for He desires that all people should come to repentance and be saved (3:9).

The letter calls believers to remain watchful, faithful, and steadfast while awaiting the fulfillment of God’s promises. Christians are encouraged to grow in the knowledge and grace of Jesus Christ and to live holy and godly lives as they await His coming.

Because of its account of the Transfiguration of Christ (1:16–18), the Orthodox Church includes passages from the Second Epistle of Peter among the Scripture readings for the Feast of the Transfiguration.
