I Thessalonians

The First Epistle to the Thessalonians is generally considered to be the earliest of St. Paul’s surviving letters. It was written from Corinth around 51 A.D. during his second missionary journey.

After being forced to leave Philippi, Paul, Silas, and Timothy traveled to Thessalonica, the capital of Macedonia (Acts 17:1). There, Paul preached in the synagogue for three Sabbaths, proclaiming that Jesus is the Messiah. His preaching attracted many followers, both Jews and Gentiles. However, some of the Jews became opposed to Paul’s ministry and stirred up a disturbance in the city, forcing Paul and his companions to leave. They traveled first to Beroea, and then continued on to Athens and Corinth.

Concerned about the young Christian community in Thessalonica, which had been left without his leadership and was experiencing persecution, Paul sent Timothy to strengthen and encourage the believers. When Timothy returned with a favorable report about their faith and steadfastness, Paul wrote this letter to express his joy and gratitude for their perseverance.

Paul also uses the letter to encourage the Thessalonians to continue living according to the teachings of Christ and to remain faithful in their Christian calling. In addition, he addresses two important questions concerning the Second Coming of Christ:

1. Will Christians who die before Christ’s Second Coming be deprived of the blessings of His Kingdom?
   Paul answers this question in 4:13–18, explaining that those who have died in Christ will share in His coming and resurrection.
2. When will Christ return in glory?
   Paul addresses this question in 5:1–11, teaching that the exact time is unknown and that Christians should therefore remain watchful, faithful, and prepared.

The First Epistle to the Thessalonians is ultimately a message of encouragement, perseverance, Christian holiness, and hope in the Second Coming of Christ.
