ICONOSTASIS – (Sl. Iconostas) The screen which separates the sanctuary from the nave, covered with icons. Actually, there are two or three tiers of icons. To the right of the Royal Doors is the icon of our Lord Jesus Christ, bearing the open book of the Gospel; to the left is the icon of the All-Holy Mother of God. On the Royal Doors are icons of the four Evangelists and the Annunciation. On the Deacon’s Doors are the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Further to the right is usually the icon of the Patron of the church. The second tier has the icons of the events in the life of Christ; and the third tier has the icons of the Apostles. Above the Royal Doors is the icon of the Mystic (Last) Supper.
