Pascha (hymns)
Troparion:
Christ is risen from the dead,
Trampling down death by death,
And upon those in the tombsBestowing life.
Paschal Verse:
(Paslm 67[68]):
Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered; let those who hate him flee from before his face!
As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; as wax melts before the fire,
So the sinners will perish before the face of God; but let the righteous be glad.
This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!
Glory to the Father, and the Son. and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen!
Hypakoe:
Before the dawn,
Mary and the women came and found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
They heard the angelic voice:
“Why do you seek among the dead as a man the One who is Everlasting Light?
Behold the clothes in the grave! Go and proclaim to the world:
The Lord is risen!”
He has slain death, as He is the Son of God, saving the race of men.
Kontakion: (Tone 8)
Thou didst descend into the tomb, O Immortal,
Thou didst destroy the power of death!
In victory didst Thou arise, O Christ God,
proclaiming “Rejoice” to the myrrhbearing women,
granting peace to Thy apostles, and bestowing
resurrection on the fallen.
PROKEIMENON (Tone 8)
(Psalm 117[118])
This is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
V: O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever!
ALLELUIA (Tone 4)
(Psalm 101[102] and Psalm 32[33])
V: Thou didst arise and have mercy on Zion.
V: The Lord looked down from heaven and saw all the sons of men.
Hymn to the Theotokos
The Angel cried to the Lady, full of grace:
Rejoice, O pure Virgin! Again, I say:
Rejoice, your Son is risen from His three days in the tomb!
With Himself He has raised all the dead. Rejoice, O ye people!
Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem!
The glory of the Lord has shone on you.
Exult now, and be glad, O Zion!
Be radiant, O pure Theotokos,
in the Resurrection of your Son!

Blessed Basil of Moscow the Fool-For-Christ
Troparion - Tone 8
Your life, O Basil, was true and your chastity undefiled.
In fasting, vigilance and exposure to heat and frost
You subdued your flesh for the sake of Christ.
Therefore your countenance shone with the brilliance of the sun.
Today the faithful glorify your holy falling-asleep.
Implore Christ to deliver us from all bondage, dissension and war,
And to grant great mercy to our souls!

Joy of all the Sorrowful
Troparion - Tone 4
Let us, sinful and humbled,
now earnestly run to the Mother of God, and let us fall down in repentance,
crying from the depths of our soul: O Lady, help, have compassion on us.
Make haste, for we perish from the multitude of our sins.
Turn not thy servants empty away, for we have thee as our only hope.
Another Troparion - Tone 2
Thou art the joy of all the sorrowful and the protectoress of the oppressed,
feeder of the hungry, consolation of travelers,
haven for the tempest-tossed, visitation of the sick,
protection and aid of the infirm, staff of old age,
O all-pure Mother of the Most High God.
Hasten, we pray, to save thy servants.
Kontakion - Tone 2
We have no other help,
we have no other hope, apart from thee,
O Lady: help us.
We hope in thee and in thee we glory.
Let us not be confounded for we are thy servants.

Venerable Alexis the Man of God (Hymns)
Troparion - Tone 4
You budded from a famous and glorious root;
You blossomed from a royal and illustrious city, O supremely wise Alexis;
You disdained everything on earth as corruptible and fleeting,
And you hastened to Christ the Master.
Always entreat Him to save our souls.
Kontakion - Tone 4
Today with hymns and praise
We celebrate the feast of Alexis the blessed and we cry aloud:
Rejoice, gladsome adornment of the righteous.

Daily Troparia and Kontakia
MONDAY Commemoration of the Holy Angels.
Troparion:
Supreme Leaders of the Heavenly Hosts,
we implore you that by your prayers you will encircle us,
unworthy as we are, with the protection of the wings of your immaterial glory,
and guard us who fall down I before you and fervently cry:
Deliver us from dangers, for you are the commanders of the Powers above.
Kontakion:
Supreme Leaders of God's armies and ministers of the divine glory,
princes of the bodiless Angels and guides of men,
ask what is good for us and great mercy,
as Supreme Leaders of the Bodiless Hosts.
TUESDAY Commemoration of St. John the Baptist.
Troparion:
The memory of the just is celebrated with hymns of praise,
but the Lord's testimony is enough for thee, O Forerunner,
for thou wast shown to be more wonderful than the Prophets
since thou wast granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom thou didst proclaim.
Then having endured great suffering for the Truth, thou didst rejoice to bring,
even to those in hell,
the good tidings that God Who had appeared in the flesh takes away the sin of the world and grants us the great mercy.
Kontakion:
O Prophet of God and Forerunner of Grace,
having obtained thy head from the earth as a most sacred rose,
we are always receiving healings;
for still as of old in the world thou preachest repentance.
WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAYCommemoration of the Cross and Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Troparion:
O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance.
Grant victory over their enemies to Orthodox Christians,
and protect Thy people with Thy Cross.
Kontakion:
O Christ our God, Who wast voluntarily lifted up on the Cross,
grant Thy mercies to Thy new people named after Thee.
Gladden with Thy power Orthodox Christians and give them victory over their enemies.
May they have as an ally that invincible trophy, Thy weapon of peace.
THURSDAY Commemoration of the Holy Apostles and St. Nicholas.
Troparion:
Holy Apostles,
intercede with our merciful God,
that He may grant to our souls the forgiveness of our sins.
Kontakion to St. Nicholas:
The truth of things revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith,
a model of meekness, and a teacher of temperance.
Therefore thou hast won the heights by humility, riches by poverty.
Holy Father Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God that our souls may be saved.
Koniakion to the Holy Apostles:
Thou hast taken the firm and divinely inspired Preachers,
O Lord, the top Apostles, for the enjoyment of Thy blessings and for repose.
For Thou hast accepted their labors and death as above every burnt offering,
O Thou Who alone knowest the secrets of our hearts.
Troparion for all Saints:
Apostles, Martyrs, and Prophets, holy Hierarchs, Saints and Righteous,
having fought the good fight and kept the faith you have boldness towards the Saviour.
Intercede for us with Him, for He is good, we pray,
that He may save our souls.
Troparion for the Faithful Departed:
Remember the souls of Thy servants, O Lord, for Thou art good,
and insofar as they sinned in this life, forgive them;
for no one is sinless but Thee,
Who canst also give rest to the departed.
Kontakion for the Faithful Departed:
With the Saints, give rest, O Christ,
to the souls of Thy servants,
where there is no pain,
no sorrow, no sighing,
but life everlasting.
Konlakion for Martyrs:
The world offers to Thee, O Lord, as the Father of creation,
the God-bearing Martyrs as the first-fruits of nature.
By their prayers through the Mother of God keep Thy Church in deep peace,
O Most Merciful One.

Martyr Juvenal of Alaska
Troparion - Tone 4
Today Alaska rejoices and America celebrates
for the New World has been sanctified by martyrdom.
Kodiak echoes with songs of thanksgiving,
Iliámna and Kenái observe the Festival of Faith.
The apostle and martyr Juvenaly is glorified
and Peter the Aleut is exalted by his voluntary sacrifice.
In their devotion and love for the Lord
they willingly endured persecution and death for the Truth.
Now in the Kingdom of Heaven they intercede for our souls.
Kontakion - Tone 4
Today Valaam joins Alaska in celebrating this joyous feast,
as her spiritual son Juvenaly embraces the New Martyr Peter with love.
Together they suffered for the Lord in America
and united the Old World with the New by their voluntary sacrifice.
Now forever they stand before the King of Glory and intercede for our souls.

Troparia and Kontakia
Short hymns sung after the small entrance at Divine Liturgy. For Sundays the subject is the Holy Resurrection; a different hymn for each of the Eight Tones. Every feast has its particular hymn describing the event or the virtues of the saint. Also there are hymns giving in an abbreviated form the substance of the day's feast. Originally, this was a hymn composed of many stanza (18-24) whose lengthy text required the use of a scroll. What remains today are short preliminary stanzas that give a concise meaning to the feast being celebrated. These hymns are also sung following the Sixth Ode in Matins, and during the Hours.

Orthodox Psalter
Daily Readings from the Orthodox Psalter
The Psalter is divided into 20 kathismata of three stases. Each stasis contains between one and three psalms. Except Kathisma 17, it is entirely the long Psalm 118.
Each of the divine services contain fixed portions of the Psalter that are read or chanted each time the service is celebrated. In addition, certain services of the Daily Cycle contain prescribed kathisma readings. These prescribed readings rotate daily so that the Psalter is read through once in its entirety in single week, and twice during Great Lent. (The Psalter is not read on Holy Thursday, Holy Friday, or during Bright Week.)

Canticles (or Odes)
There are nine Biblical Canticles that are chanted at Matins These form the basis of the Canon, a major component of Matins.
The nine Canticles are as follows:
- Canticle One - The (First) Song of Moses (Exodus 15:1-19)
- Canticle Two - The (Second) Song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:1-43)
- Canticle Three - The Prayer of Hannah (I Kings 2:1-10) KJV: 1+Samuel 2:1-10
- Canticle Four - The Prayer of Habakkuk (Habakkuk 3:1-19)
- Canticle Five - The Prayer of Isaiah (Isaiah 26:9-20)
- Canticle Six - The Prayer of Jonah (Jonah 2:2-9)
- Canticle Seven - The Prayer of the Three Holy Children (Daniel 3:26-56)
- Canticle Eight - The Song of the Three Holy Children (Daniel 3:57-88)
- Canticle Nine - The Song of the Theotokos (the Magnificat: Luke 1:46-55); the Song of Zacharias (the Benedictus Luke 1:68-79)
Originally, these Canticles were chanted in their entirety every day, with a short refrain inserted between each verse. Eventually, short verses (troparia) were composed to replace these refrains, a process traditionally inaugurated by Saint Andrew of Crete. Gradually over the centuries, the verses of the Biblical Canticles were omitted (except for the Magnificat) and only the composed troparia were read, linked to the original canticles by an Irmos. During Great Lent however, the original Biblical Canticles are still read.
Another Biblical Canticle, the The Song of Simeon (Luke 2:29-32), is either read or sung at Vespers.

Text of Prayers
In the Orthodox Church it is said that we pray what we believe and believe what we pray. The text of our written prayers not only help with our communion with God through words of praise, thanksgiving, repentance, supplication, and intercession, but also brings to remembrance the Gospel message of Christ, the Apostolic teachings, and our faith.
This part of our website gives the text of some of the prayers of the Orthodox Church.
The publication of such prayers does not limit the free expression of the Christian soul to the Creator, the Most-holy Theotokos and the Saints. On the contrary, by reading these prayers one can learn how to pray. They become models for our own, personal prayers. Often, we would like to pray but, distracted by the world around us, or troubled by fear or sorrow, we do not even know how to begin. We then begin with the a prayerbook and find that not only much of what we wanted to say is included in the prayers of the fathers, but that afterwards, we find words of our own to continue the outpouring of our soul.
